Coos County Odyssey 2022

Blacklock Point from Airport Road, Saturday, October 10

Blacklock Point from Airport Road, Saturday, October 10

This hike is limited to 15 people, but if demand is high (and we have enough leaders) we can stagger start times.

Requires Registration–Registration Form

This hike is just over 5 miles long, across fairly level terrain, with great views along the way.

Unlike the hike that we did in June, for this hike we’ll start at the Cape Blanco State Airport (see directions below), and hike parallel to the runway for awhile before heading North, and then looping around toward the shoreline, where we’ll have some of the hike’s best views. Then we’ll continue to Blacklock Point, returning by a shorter trail.

There will be a short option that starts along the same path as the rest of the group, but skips the longer loop, proceeding directly to Blacklock Point. That is an out and back hike, totaling 4 miles altogether.

The differences are shown on the map below.

Dress in layers, windbreaker with a hood is highly recommended.  Bring water and something to eat (lunch or a snack.).

Plan on 3 hours for this hike, depending on how clear the day is (there are lots of photo opportunities on a clear day).

Hike Guidelines

  1. Hike groups will be limited to 15 people.
  2. You will be asked to complete a registration form so that we can control the number.
  3. Hikers will be asked to maintain social distance (as much as 10-12 feet) on the trail
  4. Hikers will be asked to have face covering (like a bandana) that can be pulled up at tight spots on the trail
  5. Hikers should step off the trail to let others pass

Location and Time

Meet at 10:00 at the trailhead just outside of the Cape Blanco Airport Entrance. For those of you heading south on 101, you will turn on Airport Road, about 20 miles south of Bandon. Then follow Airport Road for about 3 miles. If you’re heading North, the turn on Airport Road is about 7.2 miles from Port Orford. Airport road is directly across from Pacific High School.

There are two parking areas. The one on the left isn’t as obvious, but if there are a lot of cars, we may need to use it.

Remember to complete registration form.

Blacklock Point from Floras Lake–Sunday, June 28

Blacklock Point from Floras Lake–Sunday, June 28

This hike is limited to 15 people, but if demand is high (and we have enough leaders) we can stagger start times.

Requires Registration–Registration Form

Join us for this rugged 8.2 mile journey from Floras Lake to Blacklock Point along the lake,  through densely wooded trails and exposed rocky points with beautiful ocean views.

A beautiful hike that is mostly level, and the trail is in excellent condition. It begins (and ends) with soft sand, but by staying near the lake you will have pretty solid footing.

This hike is rated difficult, but that’s mainly due to the length. Because it’s an ‘out and back,’ the distance can be shortened by turning around at any point.

Dress in layers, windbreaker with a hood is highly recommended.  Bring water and something to eat (lunch).

Plan on 4-5 hours for this hike if you don’t return early. There is a ‘restroom’ at the trailhead that’s usually in pretty rough shape. People have used the campground restroom in the past.

New Hike Guidelines

Meet at 9:30 at Boice-Cope County Park. If the demand is high, and we have a leader, we will have a second starting time about 20 minutes later.

NOTE: There is a $5 Day Use Fee at Boice-Cope Park. In the past this has sometimes even been enforced on vehicles parked on the road.

Directions: From Bandon or Coos Bay, travel south on Hwy. 101 to Langlois. Go 1/2 mile past Langlois and turn right (west) on Floras Lake Loop Road. Follow the signs 3 miles to Floras Lake and Boice-Cope County Park.

Remember to complete registration form.

Cape Arago Area Trails–Sunday, June 14

Cape Arago Area Trails–Sunday, June 14

Requires Registration–Registration Form

This hike is limited to 15 people, but if demand is high (and we have enough leaders) we can stagger start times.

Hike Description:   Take a 2.5 mile one way trip from Cape Arago Point on the Arago Pack Trail toward Simpson Reef ( we will stop there briefly to check out the local wildlife…bring binoculars, if you have them) then along the Oregon Coast Trail to a point .25 miles S of Shore Acres Botanical Garden.

*Those wishing to end their hike here need to arrive a little early (8:30am) to set a vehicle beside the road .25 miles S of Shore Acres.

For those wanting a longer hike we will cross the highway and, depending on conditions, will take the Perimeter Trail and Arago Pack Trail (or just the Pack Trail) back to Arago Point for a total of 7.5 miles of hiking.   The Short hike is rated moderate and the long hike is rated moderate to difficult.

There is also an intermediate length hike that will skip the Perimeter trail section and hike up the Pack Trail and back.

Plan on 2 hours for the short hike and 3-4 hours for the long hike.  Restrooms are at beginning and end of the long hike and a short drive from end of short hike.  Pack a lunch to enjoy along the way, or at the end.

New Hike Guidelines

  1. Hike groups will be limited to 15 people.
  2. You will be asked to complete a registration form so that we can control the number.

Remember to complete registration form.

Driving Directions:  From Hwy 101 in downtown Coos Bay follow the signs 12.3 miles through Charleston to Sunset Bay State Park.  Continue past Simpson Reef overlook to the covered Pavilion out on the point.

Canceled–Sweet Creek Falls Hike

Canceled–Sweet Creek Falls Hike

The Hikes: The Sweet Creek/Beaver Creek area offers hikers a smorgasbord mountain stream and waterfalls experience. There will be 4 different hikes all of which are out and back on the same trail and rated moderate.

The first will be a 1/2 mile trip to view Beaver Creek Falls.

The second will be a 1.2 mile hike to a different viewpoint of Beaver Creek Falls.

The third hike will be 1.6 miles to Sweet Creek Falls.

The final and best hike of the day will be a 1.6 mile hike along Sweet Creek on a trail that meanders along the water and actually travels right over the creek on a railed catwalks that is bolted to the side of the canyon.

Altogether, you will hike 4.9 miles for the day.

If you want to take it a little easier you can cut out the third hike and take a break while the rest of the group goes on this section. Since the hikes are all “out and back” you can cut any of the hikes short and return to the parking area if you are getting tired. Plan on 4 hours for all the hikes—starting for home around 2pm.
