River Trail (Cape Blanco State Park)

Length: 0.5 mile (round trip)

Difficulty: Easy
                Surface: Dirt

Access:

From Coos Bay, drive 45 miles south on US 101.  Turn right on Cape Blanco Highway.  Continue  until you see a  Cape Blanco State Park sign pointing with an arrow going straight ahead and another going to the right.  Take a right, keeping to the right past the Hughes House until you get to the boat ramp.  Park and walk to the right, going through a gate, to get to the trailhead.

Setting and Attractions:

Patrick and Jane Hughes were pioneers who settled here with a group of fellow Irish immigrants, establishing a dairy and Catholic parish among other things.  The Hughes House has undergone restoration and tours are available.  This trail has splendid views of the Sixes River and ends with a view of Castle Rock.

Trail Description:

The first part of the trail goes through cow pasture.  It opens out onto a grassy field.  There are many views of the Sixes River with a chance to see an eagle as you meander through the fields.  At the end of the trail is Castle Rock with great opportunities for bird watchers.  Bring your binoculars!
